Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, on Monday, described the peaceful conduct of the Saturday’s ward congress of the party as a sign of victory in 2015 general elections.
Similarly, the President Jonathan Support Group, Enugu State chapter, has equally commended the leadership of the party over the peaceful conduct of the congress.
Nwodo, in an interview, described the exercise as very credible and peaceful, not only in Enugu State but across other States in the country.
“We just hope that the aspirants for the various positions in the forth-coming election will observe the rule of fair play; they should not use foul language; they should conduct themselves with decorum; this thing should not be a do or die affair; only one person will emerge for each position and when that happens, we shall all support that person; there should be no bitterness, no foul language”.
Nwodo, who is also ex-Governor of old Anambra State said there was no faction in the Enugu PDP, noting that the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party, had given clear directive of the position of things in the State.
While noting that Elder David Aja is still the recognized Acting Chairman of the party in the State, he said, “I am sure that within two weeks, we should be able to have an appropriate State Executive Council, SEC, meeting, convened in line with the constitution of the party”.
Hon Anikwe, who was a member of the state legislator during the past civilian administration in the state, stressed that there was no basis for any complaint from any quarters since the congress was peaceful, free, fair and was conducted by Elder David Aja, the authentic acting state chairman of the party, recognized by the NWC.
According to Anikwe, over 600 PDP party members participated in the congress at his own ward. ‘Obeleagu Umana’ in Ezeagu council area of the state, without any form of bitterness and rancour.
Speaking on the contrary view expressed by a faction of the state PDP led by Mr Ikeje Asogwa, loyal to Governor Chime, Hon Anikwe argued that he was not sure Governor Chime was in Enugu state on Saturday while the congress was conducted.
He said that it was very surprising that Governor Chime, who is a trained lawyer, decided to contradict the decisions of the NWC of the party, who constitutionally directed that the deputy state chairman of the party, Elder David Ajah should assume the position of acting state chairman of Enugu State PDP, based on the resignation of Engineer Vita Abbah.
He said it was strange that the Governor imposed Mr Ikeje Asogwa, the Managing Director of the State Housing Corporation, on the already existing party structure.
“The directive of the NWC is very clear on this; it is a written document; nobody is above the law; Elder David Aja is the authentic Acting Chairman of the PDP in Enugu State; a any person laying claim to that position is an impostor”, he added.
